International Trips

Since 2024, BEAM has been organizing an annual multi-day trip abroad for its Biomedical Engineering students. This initiative offers students a unique opportunity to visit a major multinational company in the MedTech sector, combining professional exposure with cultural enrichment. Each trip is paired with a city visit, strengthening bonds between students and creating opportunities to form lifelong memories alongside valuable professional insights.

In 2024, the journey took us to Germany. On the first day, we visited the corporate headquarters of Siemens Healthineers in Erlangen, where we explored the company’s remarkable history at the Siemens Healthineers MedMuseum. Here, we learned about the pioneers of radiology, viewed MRI and CT scanners from the past century, and traced the company’s evolution. We then had the chance to witness the manufacturing of MRI machines on-site, seeing how the complex theories taught in class are translated into cutting-edge technology. Finally, we toured the Siemens Healthineers Experience Center, where the newest scanners and medical technologies were on display. On the second day, we traveled to Frankfurt, spending a few hours exploring the city before heading to Cologne (Keulen). That evening, we experienced the vibrant nightlife together with a pub crawl, bonding as a group. On the final day, we concluded our trip with a city game in the center of Cologne, before returning home to Ghent - inspired, connected, and with fresh perspectives on the MedTech industry.

In 2025, our students visited Legend Biotech in Ghent, a company specializing in CAR-T cell therapy for treating cancer at the individual patient level. During the visit, we explored the different steps of CAR-T cell production in the lab, gaining a rare behind-the-scenes view of cutting-edge personalized medicine. After the company visit, we traveled to The Hague (Den Haag) in the Netherlands, where we enjoyed dinner together and explored the city’s nightlife with another lively pub crawl. The following day, we embarked on a city hunt in the center of The Hague, followed by games on the beach that encouraged teamwork and relaxation. In the evening, we wrapped up a wonderful day with a friendly bowling competition. On the final day, we visited the renowned Mauritshuis Museum, taking in its impressive collection of Dutch masterpieces before heading back home to Ghent with new memories, stronger connections, and an enriched understanding of the MedTech world.
